Roof corners & end of the walk

One Madeiran tradition we learned about was the use of ornate corner tiles on their roofs. Even the roofs themselves were interesting, generally a square pyramid of terra-cotta tiles, apparently a Chinese influence from Portugal's imperial past.

The bird brings peace to the household,
the young boy fertility,
the dog protects from evil
and the leaf brings wealth.
All these we saw in Porto da Cruz at the end of our levada walk
with its magnificent Eagle's Rock
farewells
and a very welcome beer!
