One Madeiran tradition we learned about was the use of ornate corner tiles on their roofs. Even the roofs themselves were interesting, generally a square pyramid of terra-cotta tiles, apparently a Chinese influence from Portugal's imperial past.
The bird brings peace to the household, |
the young boy fertility, |
the dog protects from evil |
and the leaf brings wealth. |
All these we saw in Porto da Cruz at the end of our levada walk |
with its magnificent Eagle's Rock |
farewells |
and a very welcome beer! |
